Sustainable bedding: bamboo vs. cotton
A good night's sleep is important for your health. Your choice of bedding is a key factor in how well you sleep. Besides the importance of a good night's sleep, sustainability is also becoming increasingly important. That's why, in this blog post, we'd like to tell you more about the two materials for your bedding : bamboo and cotton .
The growth of raw materials
Both bamboo and cotton grow naturally. Bamboo is considered a type of gas, while cotton is considered a plant. The biggest difference between the two raw materials is that bamboo grows much faster. It can grow up to one meter in 24 hours. Cotton takes considerably longer, requiring at least two months for cotton to form. Based on growth rate, bamboo is therefore significantly more sustainable than cotton. A few other facts about the two raw materials:
Bamboo
- Artificial fertilization is not necessary;
- This type of grass regenerates itself. Once bamboo is harvested, you don't need to replant it;
- The product produces â…“ more oxygen during growth. It also absorbs about twice as much COâ‚‚ as wood, for example.
Cotton
- Cotton requires a lot of irrigation and water to grow well. However, in the right conditions, it can grow without fertilizer;
- Cotton formation only occurs after two months;
- The raw material is sensitive to drought, diseases and rodents.
Based on the growth process, bamboo is also much more sustainable than cotton.
Processing and production of bamboo and cotton
Now that you know how both raw materials grow, we would also like to tell you more about the processing and production of both bamboo and cotton.
Bamboo
As you've read, growing bamboo is very sustainable. Processing bamboo is much less sustainable. Bamboo is a very hard grass. To do anything with the bamboo fibers, chemicals are needed to loosen them. After that, it can be processed into textiles.
Cotton
Most cotton lint is harvested by machine. Egyptian cotton is an example of cotton that is picked by hand. It is then pressed into a ball and may be combed first. At the spinning mill, it is cleaned, bleached, and dyed.
Conclusion
Bamboo and cotton are very popular and both have their own advantages and disadvantages when it comes to sustainability. Want to make a sustainable choice? Then choose bamboo. It has a lower environmental impact.
